South of Nara, deep in the mountains beyond Yoshino, the Ōmine range rises steeply into the sky. At its heart, Mount Sanjōgatake has been a sacred site for mountain ascetics since ancient times — a path walked for centuries by those who seek not comfort, but endurance.

On a clear summer morning, the trail steepens almost immediately after the first steps. Mud, bare rock, and gnarled tree roots mark the way. At the chain holds, climbers grip the iron links and pull their weight upward, placing each foot with care before moving to the next.

As the summit temple draws near, the wind picks up. Mist rolls through and disappears. On this path, there are no shortcuts.

“Things are not going well.” — At such times, struggle with all your might.

It is precisely in adversity that human beings have the greatest chance to grow.

Comfort and lukewarm ease are the real danger — a trap that leads to decline.

The time spent struggling is also the time something is being carved into shape. What cannot be born in stillness may only come into being through hardship.
