From beneath the great eaves of Tōdai-ji, the ridge of Mount Kasuga fades into a soft morning haze. The stone-paved path leading to the shrine catches the light at the same angle it has for a thousand years.
The people who built this ancient capital 1,300 years ago — who cast the Great Buddha, designed the imperial city, and carried Buddhist teachings across the sea — could never have done any of it if they had decided, at the start, what their limits were.
From Asuka to Nara, from Nara to the ages beyond — it has always been those people, the ones who refused to set their own limits, who moved history forward.
